Volunteer with Salem Sound Coastwatch
I'm hopeful for the Salem Sound watershed because I’ve personally witnessed so many more people — of all generations — creating positive change in our local rivers and ocean.”
Gary Moore, SSCW Volunteer since 1990
Make a difference for the coast we share
Volunteers are essential to Salem Sound Coastwatch’s work to protect and restore the beaches, waterways, and coastal habitats of Salem Sound. Whether you have a few hours to give, want to participate in community science, or are looking for a meaningful service project for your company, there are many ways to get involved.

Ways to Get Involved
Beach and River Stewardship
Plastic pollution in the ocean and our rivers is a very serious problem affecting all marine and coastal life, much of which comes from storm drains on the streets. Through our Beach Clean-up Days, River Clean-up Days, Ghost Gear Removal, Adopt a Beach, and Storm Drain Stenciling Programs, you can help keep our beaches and ocean free of plastics.
Community Science and Water Quality
In the summer months, volunteer with our Clean Beaches and Streams program. You will collect water samples at a local beach or stream to help monitor the cleanliness of the water flowing on to our beaches and into Salem Sound. You can also join our marine invasives monitoring in the summer at docks, tidepools, and the rocky shore.
Training is provided, no prior experience required.
Invasive Plant Removal
Support healthy coastal and watershed habitats. Volunteer to help remove invasive plants, such as pepperweed and bittersweet. You will help care for living shorelines and other restoration projects.
Habitat Restoration
Help us maintain our many natural areas throughout Salem Sound, including our pollinator and rain gardens. Plant, weed, compost, and maintain the overall health of some of the most effective land ecosystems that help protect and restore the ocean. You can also help maintain living shorelines that create natural storm barriers.
Community Events and Education
Help staff outreach tables at local festivals and farmer’s markets, support educational activities, and connect with community members about Salem Sound Coastwatch’s work. Volunteer at the Run for the Beach 5K in June, opportunities include joining the planning committee, and day of support in setup, water and food stations, clean up, and more.
Behind-the-Scenes Support
Contribute your skills through office projects, mailings, graphic design, and other tasks that support our programs and fundraising.
