Meet Our Staff
Barbara Warren / Executive Director
Barbara has led SSCW for 20 years. In addition to her role as ED, she is the Mass Bays National Estuary Regional Coordinator for the Lower North Shore. She has worked extensively with local municipalities on environmental issues on land and water and is sought-after as a speaker. Her special areas of interest are climate resiliency and nature-based solutions for climate adaptation. Barbara holds a BA from Wellesley College, MEd from Lesley University, and an MS in Environmental Science from Antioch College New England. She started her career in education and worked as a teacher, artist, and business owner before moving to the North Shore and discovering SSCW as a volunteer.
Alison Frye / Associate Director
Alison’s primary focus is on coastal resilience and habitat restoration projects. She earned a BS in Biology from Bates College and a MS in marine biology from Northeastern University. There, her research focused on nature-based solutions for climate adaptation, specifically utilizing living shorelines to mitigate erosion in the Great Marsh. Before coming to SSCW, Alison was a long-time science teacher and continues to teach a marine and climate science course to high school seniors at Waring School in Beverly.
Carly McIver / School to Sea Director
Carly is an enthusiastic environmental educator, and loves supporting learners in all the creative ways they connect to the environment. She has taught in science museums, zoos, and outdoor schools across the country, and is excited to be back home on the North Shore. Carly received a BA in Environmental Science and Policy from Smith College, an MS in Environmental Education from Southern Oregon University, and has published and presented on her research on assessment in non-formal environmental education.
Susan Marsh / Community Engagement Manager
Susan manages events, outreach, and fundraising support through SSCW’s large and active volunteer community. She engages volunteers though activities that promote a hands-on understanding of our watershed. In addition, she supports development communications with our donors. Susan is a long-time Salem resident, former architect, and Salem Public School science teacher. She holds a MEd from Salem State University and a M.Arch from Tulane University. Susan volunteered with SSCW for over 30 years before joining the staff.

Her experience allows her to provide education and outreach to the North Shore in SSCW’s various programs.
Martha Bednarz / Development Strategist

She manages marketing and development communications, donor relations, and fundraising events. She has nearly 20 years’ experience in nonprofit development, having worked for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Waring School, Boston Partners in Education, Interise, and English for New Bostonians. She is a three-time ESC Encore Fellow, receiving the Encore Fellow Excellence Award in 2022.
As an environmental educator for the School to Sea Program, Mandy brings her passion for marine ecosystems and conservation into the classroom and to marine science field trips. As Senior Aquarist at the New England Aquarium, she cared for the penguin colony and a variety of marine animals, presenting to thousands of visitors each year. Mandy also worked in Dominica for the International Fund for Animal Welfare training teachers and educating students on local marine species and conservation. She holds a BS in Zoology from North Carolina State University.
Sal Faustino / Community Engagement Coordinator
Sal works as our Community Engagement Coordinator, with experience in equitable outreach and education. Growing up multilingual in the cultural communities of the Boston area has given Sal the perspective that language is only a portion of communication between neighbors. He holds a role on Salem’s Climate Resilience Leadership Council, and has used his education in art and illustration to enhance equity and resilience among language-isolated environmental justice communities. He has over ten years of experience in visual and conceptual art, holding a degree in Commercial Media and Illustration, with a focus on animation education and public influence. He aims to demonstrate the parallels between the ecologies of our local wildlife and the cultural harmonies within our community through visual storytelling, helping foster deeper appreciation and connection to our environment.
