SUMMARY:What Happens on the Land Affects Salem Sound
DESCRIPTION:The Marblehead Conservancy invites all members\, friends\, and others to its Annual Meeting at Abbot Public Library\, 3 Brook Road in Marblehead. Light refreshments will be provided. A brief business meeting beginning at 7:00 p.m. will be followed by a guest speaker\, Barbara Warren of Salem Sound Coastwatch\, addressing “What Happens on the Land Affects Salem Sound.” You can register to join in-person or via Zoom at tinyurl.com/2024-Conservancy. \n\n\n\nBarbara Warren will share her extensive knowledge of Salem Sound and Marblehead with a particular focus on land-based initiatives. We all appreciate and enjoy Salem Sound’s magnificent natural resources – its open ocean\, beaches\, marshes\, rivers\, streams – but it is the land that sheds its water into them that determines their condition. What happens on the land affects the ocean. \n\n\n\nWith the mission to improve the water quality of Salem Sound\, much of Salem Sound Coastwatch’s work takes place on the land that drains into the harbors and ocean. Warren will describe some of the projects and ways they work with communities to improve Salem Sound and its watershed. This will include Marblehead’s Forest River Conservation Area\, Steer Swamp\, Municipal Shipyards Resiliency Improvements Project as well as living shorelines\, eelgrass and horseshoe crabs. \n\n\n\nBarbara Warren is the Executive Director for Salem Sound Coastwatch\, a regional non-profit that works to improve and protect the environmental quality of Salem Sound and its watershed. In addition\, she serves as the Lower North Shore Regional Coordinator for the Massachusetts Bays National Estuary Partnership. She has been with Salem Sound Coastwatch since 2003. She grew up in Montana but came to Massachusetts to attend Wellesley College and basically stayed. Warren has a master’s in Environmental Science from Antioch New England and a master’s in Education from Lesley University. \n\n\n\nWith Salem Sound Coastwatch and its partners\, she has implemented programs that engage volunteers\, including Salt Marsh Assessment\, Marine Invasive Species Monitoring\, Greenscapes\, and Adopt a Beach. As a certified Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Provider\, Warren focuses much of her work on climate change awareness and coastal resilience projects\, working with Salem\, Manchester\, Marblehead\, Beverly and Peabody. She spearheaded Salem Sound Coastwatch’s partnership with the City of Salem to construct the first living shoreline at Collins Cove. She has been working with the Town of Marblehead since 2018 on climate adaptation planning.

SUMMARY:Marine Invaders on the Move - Underwater in Salem Sound 2024 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Barbara Warren\, Executive Director\, Salem Sound Coastwatch\, Lexie Neffinger\, Coastal Habitat and Water Quality Specialist\, MA Office of Coastal Zone Management\, and Alison Frye\, Associate Director\, Salem Sound Coastwatch \n\n\n\nRSVP to attend in-person (seating limit 45) at info@salemsound.org or register for the Zoom presentation at abbotlibrary.org.  \n\n\n\nGreen crabs and blue crabs and shore crabs\, OH MY! These crabs\, along with colonial tunicates\, European oysters\, and Dead Man’s Fingers\, are just a few of the non-native species found in Salem Sound. Join us to hear about the trends Salem Sound Coastwatch has observed over the past 20 years and new species to watch out for!  \n\n\n\nInvasive species are non-native organisms that have been accidentally or deliberately introduced to a region and cause ecological or economic harm to their new environment. Today\, warming ocean water from climate change presents an additional factor\, allowing species\, such as fiddler and blue crabs\, to extend beyond their natural historic range. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6:30 for a hands-on viewing of animals in our touch tank! \n\n\n\nBarbara Warren is Salem Sound Coastwatch’s Executive Director for the past 20 years. She has an MS in Environmental Science from Antioch New England and M.A. in Education from Lesley University.  \n\n\n\nLexie Neffinger is the Coastal Habitat and Water Quality Specialist at the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM). Lexie supports CZM’s coastal habitat and water quality initiatives\, including the coordination of the Marine Invader Monitoring and Information Collaborative\, which convenes volunteer monitoring networks that search for invasive species across New England. She earned a BS in Environmental Science from Fordham University and an MS in Coastal and Marine System Science from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi\, where she gained experience in ecological monitoring\, bioassessment\, and restoration of coastal ecosystems.  \n\n\n\nAlison Frye is the Associate Director at Salem Sound Coastwatch\, where her primary focus is on coastal resilience and habitat restoration projects. She earned a BS in Biology from Bates College and an MS in marine biology from Northeastern University\, where her research focused on nature-based solutions for climate adaptation.
