SUMMARY:Underwater in Salem Sound Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Drifters — Ocean Currents in the Gulf of Maine and STEM Education \n\n\n\n** This is a hybrid program which can be attended in person OR online via Zoom. \n\n\n\nIn Person Registration HERE \n\n\n\nOnline Zoom Registration HERE \n\n\n\nPresentation Description: \n\n\n\nWhere would you end up if you were carried by the ocean from Salem Sound? This past winter and spring\, Salem High School students explored that question together with Salem Sound Coastwatch\, supported by MIT Sea Grant funding. Students built and launched two floating drifters that travel with ocean currents and send back real-time data via satellite. \n\n\n\nThe drifters are revealing how water moves through the Gulf of Maine\, contributing to systems like NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System and improving ocean models—while giving students the chance to analyze their own data and take part in real scientific research. \n\n\n\nFounded in 2004 by partners including the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation\, Southern Maine Community College\, and NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center\, the program has deployed more than 1\,500 drifters with about 100 schools. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Alex Borreil is an Educator for the School to Sea program for Salem Sound Coastwatch and holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. In addition to being an educator\, she was also the Principal Investigator for the drifter program. Previous to coming to Salem\, Alex spent a collective six years leading and creating field and classroom-based marine science courses and research projects for students in the Caribbean and Florida Keys. As a New England Native\, her goal is to inspire young scientists to continue learning and protecting their local coastlines through hands-on educational experiences.   \n\n\n\nFor the past fourteen years\, Underwater in Salem Sound has been jointly sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch and Abbot Public Library. All the lectures are free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Underwater in Salem Sound Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Legacy Nutrients Below: Sediment’s Role in Salem Harbor Water Quality \n\n\n\n** This is a hybrid program which can be attended in person OR online via Zoom. \n\n\n\n Attend in person by registering below. \n\n\n\nAttend online via Zoom by registering HERE \n\n\n\nSince 2010\, Dr. Brad Hubeny has been investigating the water quality of Salem Harbor in collaboration with Salem Sound Coastwatch. What started as a simple question about water clarity changes has led to a multi-decade partnership and fascinating continuous research. Our 2022 Underwater in Salem Sound lecture focused on phytoplankton blooms as the cause of decreasing water clarity. We now look to the nutrient conditions and sources that influence those blooms. We hope to illuminate the role of the phosphorus and nitrogen sequestered in the sediments of Salem Harbor as a likely and under-studied source of nutrients\, and to share what we’ve found about the dynamics that influence the bioavailability of these elements in pore and bottom waters. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. Attendance to join in person is limited to 50 attendants\, or attend online via Zoom. Please register to join IN PERSON BELOW or join via Zoom HERE. If registering for Zoom\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting online. \n\n\n\nDr. Brad Hubeny\, Professor and Lab Director at Salem State University\, is an environmental geoscientist who utilizes stratigraphic\, geomorphic\, geochemical\, and geophysical techniques to reconstruct past environmental and climatic conditions. He primarily works in coastal and lake systems\, and current research locations include Walden and Sluice Ponds\, as well as Salem\, Duxbury\, Kingston\, and Plymouth Harbors in Massachusetts. Generally\, Hubeny is interested in high-resolution records of climate variability during the Late Holocene and in pollution reconstructions (heavy metals\, eutrophication) from industrialized watersheds. \n\n\n\nRenee Veresh is an environmental geochemist with over ten years of experience in the field and lab. She currently manages the Viking Environmental Stable Isotope Lab at Salem State. Her research interests are broad\, ranging from paleoclimatology to nutrient cycling\, though she is usually involved in several water quality projects at once in partnership with SSCW\, MassBays NEP\, or Center for Coastal Studies (sometimes all three!). \n\n\n\nFor the past fourteen years\, Underwater in Salem Sound has been jointly sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch and Abbot Public Library. All the lectures are free and open to the public. An upcoming lecture will be on May 20.

SUMMARY:Tree Care Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Did you know over-mulching your tree can do more harm than good? That “volcano” shape we often see can suffocate the tree\, causing roots to girdle and eventually lead to decline or death \n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, April 15 outside the Salem Sound Coastwatch office for a hands on tree care workshop with Dave Bresnahan\, Salem’s Greening Gateway Cities – Salem MA Forester. Learn proper mulching techniques\, as well as best practices for watering and pruning both new and established trees. \n\n\n\nTo register\, please email anna.cortes@salemsound.org. \n\n\n\nIf you’re a Salem resident and interested in adding more trees to your neighborhood or yard\, check to see if you’re in the planting zone by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Resilient Together: Winter Island Park Bank Restoration Project (Virtual Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:Join this virtual meeting to learn about the planned nature-based solutions to address coastal erosion and non-native invasive vegetation at Winter Island Park. With funding from the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management since 2023\, the City of Salem has moved the project to a fully permitted design and is working to secure grant funding for implementation. Wilkinson Ecological Designs will explain the project’s next steps for creating a more resilient coastline at four areas: the northeast corner of Waikiki Beach\, the Fort Pickering Headland\, the southern Fort rampart\, and the parking lot edge. Barbara Warren will share upcoming opportunities to learn more about Fort Pickering’s history and volunteer with non-native invasive vegetation control.  \n\n\n\nPublic Input Page: https://publicinput.com/d3486 \n\n\n\nZoom Link:https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84910077886?pwd=k1CRg1XdHLQRbNdRK8M9BW3DkahVfT.1#success

SUMMARY:Underwater in Salem Sound Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Beverly’s Ghost Gear Challenge: A Winter Recovery Mission \n\n\n\n** This is a hybrid program which can be attended in person OR online via Zoom.  \n\n\n\nAttend online via Zoom by registering HERE \n\n\n\nSpeaker:  Capt. Peter Dickman\, Beverly Harbormaster  \n\n\n\nTalk Description Lobstering has shaped the North Shore for centuries\, transforming lobster from “poor man’s food” into a valuable commercial fishery and a core part of the region’s maritime heritage. As fishing gear evolved from wood to long-lasting wire\, new challenges emerged. Lost or abandoned lobster traps can persist on the seafloor for decades\, continuing to capture marine life in a process called ghost fishing. This derelict gear harms habitat\, affects fisheries\, and is a growing concern in harbors worldwide.  \n\n\n\nHarbormaster Peter Dickman will explain how recent changes in maritime law have made it possible for coastal communities to address this issue and will present plans for the Beverly Harbor Derelict Trap Recovery Project. Funded through a Fishing Trap Removal Assessment and Prevention program grant from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science\, the project will use scuba-based recovery operations over two winter periods to locate\, remove\, and document abandoned traps\, improve marine habitat\, and support sustainable reuse or recycling of recovered materials. Learn about this collaborative effort to protect marine life\, support sustainable fishing\, and honor the working waterfront tradition.  \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio:  \n\n\n\nCapt. Peter Dickman has served as Harbormaster for Beverly\, Massachusetts\, since July 2022 and is a lifelong mariner and Beverly native. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and a Master 100-ton Merchant Mariner Credential. Capt. Dickman has hands-on experience in maritime safety\, vessel operations\, and local waters management\, and will be spearheading a derelict fishing trap recovery project in Beverly Harbor. A dedicated environmental steward\, he unites local divers\, fishermen\, students\, and organizations to protect and restore the harbor\, creating lasting benefits for the marine environment.  \n\n\n\nFor the past fourteen years\, Underwater in Salem Sound has been jointly sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch and Abbot Public Library. All the lectures are free and open to the public. Upcoming lectures will be on April 15 and May 20. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. Attendance to join in person is limited to 50 attendants\, or attend online via Zoom. Please register to join IN PERSON BELOW or VIA ZOOM HERE. If registering for Zoom\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting online. \n\n\n\nFor more events and to register in person\, please visit abbotlibrary.org/events.

SUMMARY:Salem Sound Birdwatch
DESCRIPTION:Join Salem Sound Coastwatch for our inal Winter Waterbird Survey of the season to help monitor waterbird populations throughout Salem Sound and the North Shore. \n\n\n\n📅 Survey Date: Sunday\, March 15 | 8:30 AM📍 Locations: Multiple sites across Salem\, Beverly\, Danvers\, Marblehead\, Manchester\, Swampscott\, and Lynn \n\n\n\nThis survey is a team-based effort. Volunteers will work in small groups led by an experienced team leader\, making this a great opportunity for birders of all experience levels. New birders are encouraged to participate\, no prior survey experience is required! \n\n\n\nWe are also seeking additional team leaders. If you are confident in your winter waterbird identification\, consider signing up as a team leader. Team leaders are responsible for eBird data collection and for guiding groups that include less experienced birders. \n\n\n\nThe data collected during this survey is used to track long-term population trends\, monitor migration patterns\, and help assess the overall health of our waterways. These surveys have been conducted consistently since the late 1990s\, making volunteer participation essential to maintaining this valuable long-term dataset. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. To sign up\, please contact Anna Sheridan at anna.sheridan@salemsound.org.All data will be recorded using the eBird app and shared with Salem Sound Coastwatch. \n\n\n\nRSVP by March 13 to participate.
