SUMMARY:Marine Invasive Species Training Workshop 
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a workshop to learn how to monitor marine invasive species this summer! These creatures have been introduced to new locations by human activities and have damaging impacts on our local ecosystem. Salem Sound Coastwatch has monitored marine invasive species at docks\, in tidepools\, and along the rocky shore every summer for the past 20+ years with the help of community science volunteers. We are on the lookout for a variety of invasive crustaceans\, tunicates\, and seaweeds\, among others!   \n\n\n\nAs a founding member of the Marine Invader Monitoring and Information Collaborative (MIMIC)\, we share the data our volunteers collect with the MA Office of Coastal Zone Management\, who tracks of the abundance of marine invaders along the North Atlantic coast.    \n\n\n\nThe training session will be held at Winter Island Park (50 Winter Island Rd.\, Salem) on Wednesday\, June 11th\, 5:00-6:30pm. Please meet us at the Function Hall (next to the boat ramp) for an introduction to the species we monitor. We will then head over to the tidepools to see what we find. Attend in person or register virtually with Abbot Library. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Estefany Argueta\, PhD Candidate in Dr. Lisa Komoroske’s lab at UMass Amherst and UMass Amherst Gloucester Marine Station at Hodgkin’s Cove \n\n\n\nPresentation title: Swimming North: How Fish Adapt to Climate Change \n\n\n\nTalk Description: We’ll explore research about black sea bass\, a fish species that’s making its way into the Gulf of Maine’s warming waters. As our oceans continue to warm\, understanding how marine life adapts to these changes becomes increasingly important for our coastal communities and ecosystems. The Gulf of Maine is warming faster than 99% of the world’s oceans\, creating a unique natural laboratory for studying how marine species respond to climate change. Our research combines fish physiology and genetics to understand how black sea bass are successfully colonizing new territories. \n\n\n\nYou’ll learn about the dramatic changes occurring in the Gulf of Maine’s ecosystem\, the journey of black sea bass as they expand their territory from Cape Cod into Maine’s waters and how marine animals use both short-term adjustments and long-term adaptations to survive in new environments. We will explore scientific methods used to study fish physiology and genetics and discuss what these findings mean for the future of our local marine ecosystem and fisheries \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio:Estefany Argueta is a PhD Candidate in Dr. Lisa Komoroske’s lab at UMass Amherst. She received her bachelor’s degree in animal ecology with a focus in fisheries and aquatic science from Iowa State University. Her passion for research has taken her across the globe – from the cold waters of Alaska to the tropical shores of Brazil\, with stops in Chile\, North Carolina\, Oregon\, and Massachusetts. In the Komoroske lab\, she studies how animals adapt to changing environments\, focusing particularly on cold-blooded creatures (ectotherms). Her current research spans two exciting projects: studying how green sea turtles in Brazil cope with climate change through their mating patterns and investigating why Black Sea Bass are expanding their territory into the warming waters of the Gulf of Maine.

There will be a discussion about what we do protects the water quality of the Salem Sound and how local residents and businesses can help SESD achieve this mission. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: David Michelsen started his career as an engineer working to support New England municipalities. After 18 years in the private sector\, he joined SESD as the District Engineer in 2013. As Executive Director of SESD since 2022\, David has worked with his staff and local stakeholders to ensure consistent permit compliance and plant performance 365 days a year\, 24-hours a day\, while simultaneously incorporating forward planning and capital improvement processes that will help SESD endure for another 100 years.

Attend in person or register virtually with Abbot Library. \n\n\n\n Speaker: Barbara Warren\, Salem Sound Coastwatch  \n\n\n\nPresentation Title: Saving our Shoreline \n\n\n\nTalk Description: Since 2018\, Barbara Warren\, Salem Sound Coastwatch’s Executive Director\, has been providing a yearly update on local climate adaptation efforts and the state of the climate. Keeping track of the many on-going projects is not a simple task\, but Barbara and the Salem Sound Coastwatch staff are working with Salem Sound municipalities and residents to build climate awareness and coastal resilience. This presentation is an opportunity to see the breadth of projects taking place in the Salem Sound communities from climate resilient seawalls\, floodable parks\, living shorelines\, and coastal bank stabilization. Come learn about projects that are designed to make our shorelines more resistant to increasing storms\, precipitation\, and sea level rise. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Barbara Warren is the Executive Director for Salem Sound Coastwatch and the Lower North Regional Coordinator for the Massachusetts Bays National Estuary Partnership. Barbara is a certified Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Provider and has worked on climate awareness and coastal resilience projects since 2007 across the six Salem Sound communities. Barbara has a M.A. in Education from Lesley University and a M.S. in Environmental Science from Antioch New England.

Attend in person or register virtually with Abbot Library \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Jennifer Polinski\, Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute Senior Research Associate \n\n\n\nPresentation: Sequencing the Sea: How environmental DNA can reveal an ecosystem’s hidden biodiversity \n\n\n\nTalk Description: Oceans cover over 70% of our planet\, representing 99% of its “living” space\, and house a tremendous diversity of life. However\, our oceans and their biodiversity are under increasing threat from rising temperatures\, acidification\, pollution\, overharvesting\, and habitat loss. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are a powerful approach for protecting and restoring marine ecosystems. International efforts to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 are underway\, and innovative methods for assessing and monitoring biodiversity are crucial to the success of new and previously established MPAs. In this talk\, learn how scientists at the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute are using cutting-edge genomic tools to assess marine biodiversity\, from the smallest microbe to the largest whale\, to measure the impact of these protective measures on fragile marine ecosystems.  \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Jennifer Polinski is a Senior Research Associate at the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI)\, with over a decade of experience applying cutting-edge genomics techniques to marine organisms and environments. She obtained her B.A. In Biology and Mathematics from Albion College and M.S. in Marine Biology from Florida Atlantic University. Since joining GMGI in 2017\, she has contributed to a wide range of research including sequencing genomes of the American lobster and Jonah crab\, uncovering patterns of aging and longevity in sea urchins\, and using eDNA to ass whole ecosystem biodiversity. Jennifer is an avid SCUBA diver\, both recreationally and scientifically\, and an amateur underwater photographer.

You will be guided through the key features of the eBird mobile app\, learn how to efficiently log sightings\, and navigate the app’s functions. We will also cover an in-depth review of Salem Sound’s winter waterfowl and our long-term data (1988-2019). You will learn practical tips to identify common waterfowl and understand the differences in plumage.  This new initiative aims to document an accurate count of migratory winter waterfowl within the Salem Sound\, providing insight into the health of the Sound and various population trends. \n\n\n\nPlease join us if you want to enhance your technical and observational skills\, contribute to our collective data efforts\, be a part of our commitment to environmental stewardship\, and volunteer for “Salem Sound Birdwatch.” Novices to expert birders are welcome to attend this workshop\, which will be held in person with an option to join via Zoom. \n\n\n\nPlease register by February 18 by 5PM to anna.sheridan@salemsound.org. This even will be held at Independence Park and we will meet at 11AM at the park. We will look for wintering sea ducks and shore birds as the tide goes out.  \n\n\n\nThis is an excellent event for new and seasoned birders alike. Open to all abilities\, binoculars not required! Independence Park has grass and sloped asphalt walking paths and ability to navigate uneven terrain is needed. The Lab is a unique partnership between government agencies and nonprofits: Boston Harbor Now\, UMass Boston School for the Environment\, the City of Boston\, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation\, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs\, the National Park Service\, and the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag. Their Living Seawalls project was recently launched at two locations in Boston Harbor and is the first Living Seawalls project in North America.
