Eelgrass meadows provide habitat for fish and shellfish\, stabilize our shoreline\, and capture carbon\, but have declined from much of the Sound and Massachusetts coastline. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an inside look at local efforts to study and restore eelgrass in Massachusetts using innovative techniques. Learn how the team from the Massachusetts Bays National Estuary Partnership\, MA Division of Marine Fisheries\, and Salem Sound Coastwatch are conducting research on eelgrass seeds and testing new approaches to restore eelgrass. We’ll share exciting discoveries uncovered from our data and discuss implications for future restoration work that can help reestablish this critical marine habitat for generations to come. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: This is a hybrid event\, taking place in person at the library and online via Zoom\, and registration is required. Please register to join in person below OR join online via Zoom HERE. If registering for Zoom\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting online. \n\n\n\nJill Carr is MassBays NEP’s Program Manager for Coastal Habitat Restoration and Data Quality. She specializes in coordinating environmental monitoring and coastal habitat mapping projects. Carr enjoys interdisciplinary collaborations and research projects that influence natural resource management\, and that aim to restore\, inventory\, and protect coastal habitats\, with special expertise in seagrass systems. Carr holds a bachelor’s in Coastal Studies from the University of Connecticut and a master’s in Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing from Salem State University. \n\n\n\nDr. Forest Schenck is a Marine Fisheries Habitat Specialist with the MA Division of Marine Fisheries’ Habitat Program. His work focuses on developing and implementing strategies to protect and enhance the health of marine ecosystems in Massachusetts to support sustainable fisheries or\, as he likes to put it\, ‘healthier habitats for more fish.’ Schenck holds a bachelor’s in Biology from Macalester College and a Ph.D. in Marine and Environmental Sciences from Northeastern University. \n\n\n\nAs Associate Director at Salem Sound Coastwatch\, Alison Frye supports projects that strengthen coastal resilience and protect marine habitats. Her work includes researching and restoring seagrass habitat\, monitoring salt marsh health\, and developing strategies to enhance coastal communities’ resilience to climate change. Frye earned a bachelor’s in Biology from Bates College and a master’s in Marine Biology from Northeastern University\, where her research focused on nature-based solutions for climate adaptation\, particularly site-selection for constructed oyster reefs. \n\n\n\nFor the past fourteen years\, Underwater in Salem Sound has been jointly sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch and Abbot Public Library. You will be guided through the key features of the eBird mobile app\, learn how to efficiently log sightings\, and navigate the app’s functions. We will also cover an in-depth review of Salem Sound’s winter waterfowl and our long-term data (1988-2019). You will learn practical tips to identify common waterfowl and understand the differences in plumage.  This new initiative aims to document an accurate count of migratory winter waterfowl within the Salem Sound\, providing insight into the health of the Sound and various population trends. \n\n\n\nPlease join us if you want to enhance your technical and observational skills\, contribute to our collective data efforts\, be a part of our commitment to environmental stewardship\, and volunteer for “Salem Sound Birdwatch.”  \n\n\n\nNovices to expert birders are welcome to attend this workshop\, which will be held in person with an option to join via Zoom. \n\n\n\nPlease register by November 18 by 5PM to anna.sheridan@salemsound.org. DESCRIPTION:Join Salem Sound Coastwatch for a public COASTSWEEP at Collins Cove in Salem! \n\n\n\nEvery year from August to November volunteers in Massachusetts participate in a statewide beach cleanup sponsored by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZSM). COASTSWEEP is an international effort\, where volunteers around the world collect marine debris found along our coasts\, categorize\, and tally the information. Information helps us discover the sources of marine debris and help find solutions to the problem. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at Collins Cove beach on the corner of Webb Street and East Collins Street. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP by sending an email to susan.marsh@salemsound.org or calling (978) 741-7900

DESCRIPTION:Explore the marine creatures that inhabit the tidepool on the rocky shore! Salem Sound Coastwatch staff will bring buckets\, nets\, and ID guides and help you identify what we find. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes (no open toes) that can get wet and traverse slippery rocks. Please meet at the Winter Island rain garden (look for the SSCW flag!) and let the gatehouse staff know you’re with us. All ages welcome.
