SUMMARY:Horseshoe Crab Community Scientist Training - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:The horseshoe crabs are coming! Starting in late April\, horseshoe crabs return to Salem Sound to spawn along our shores. This virtual training session will prepare you to become a horseshoe crab community scientist! You’ll learn about the horseshoe crab’s unique features and how to use our online survey to report horseshoe crab sightings. We will share the exciting trends we’ve uncovered over the past two years of this volunteer effort to learn more about Salem Sound’s horseshoe crab population.  \n\n\n\nTo attend this training session\, please RSVP to alison.frye@salemsound.org. A Zoom link will be provided to those who RSVP.

SUMMARY:Resilient Together: Collins Cove Park Neighborhood Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Collins Cove and Bridge Street residents – we want to hear from you!   \n\n\n\nThe City of Salem has been awarded a grant from the Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) to continue designing flood alternatives for the Bridge Street/Collins Cove Park communities. This neighborhood was identified and prioritized for the development of resilience strategies to address inland and coastal flooding.  \n\n\n\nPlease join us on Tuesday\, February 25th from 7:00-8:00pm on Zoom for an informational meeting to kick off this project. You’ll hear from the City of Salem’s Sustainability Department\, Salem Sound Coastwatch\, and AECOM\, the environmental engineering consultant\, on the impacts of stormwater and coastal flooding to the area. We hope you will share your own experiences with coastal and stormwater flooding. This information will provide valuable insight for the project early-on to prioritize flooding solutions.  \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89669772289?pwd=fJAyPZJmhdF5GiT8VsOcpqDmX2yNGQ.1  Meeting ID: 896 6977 2289 Passcode: 090074

SUMMARY:Underwater In Salem Sound Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:This event is free and open to the public. Attend in person or register virtually with Abbot Library \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Jennifer Polinski\, Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute Senior Research Associate \n\n\n\nPresentation: Sequencing the Sea: How environmental DNA can reveal an ecosystem’s hidden biodiversity \n\n\n\nTalk Description: Oceans cover over 70% of our planet\, representing 99% of its “living” space\, and house a tremendous diversity of life. However\, our oceans and their biodiversity are under increasing threat from rising temperatures\, acidification\, pollution\, overharvesting\, and habitat loss. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are a powerful approach for protecting and restoring marine ecosystems. International efforts to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 are underway\, and innovative methods for assessing and monitoring biodiversity are crucial to the success of new and previously established MPAs. In this talk\, learn how scientists at the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute are using cutting-edge genomic tools to assess marine biodiversity\, from the smallest microbe to the largest whale\, to measure the impact of these protective measures on fragile marine ecosystems.  \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Jennifer Polinski is a Senior Research Associate at the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI)\, with over a decade of experience applying cutting-edge genomics techniques to marine organisms and environments. She obtained her B.A. In Biology and Mathematics from Albion College and M.S. in Marine Biology from Florida Atlantic University. Since joining GMGI in 2017\, she has contributed to a wide range of research including sequencing genomes of the American lobster and Jonah crab\, uncovering patterns of aging and longevity in sea urchins\, and using eDNA to ass whole ecosystem biodiversity. Jennifer is an avid SCUBA diver\, both recreationally and scientifically\, and an amateur underwater photographer.

SUMMARY:Indigenous People's Day
DESCRIPTION:Attend the Massachusett Tribe Flag Raising and Presentation at City Hall. Indigenous Peoples Day reminds us of the deep-rooted connection between the Massachusett tribe and the lands and waters of where we live today. The many indigenous communities relied on our watershed and ocean along the sound for food\, fishing\, and other resources using sustainable practices. By recognizing these connections\, we honor the indigenous stewardship of the land and the interconnectedness of our ecosystems over time. Indigenous knowledge and practices continue to offer valuable insights into how we can preserve and protect our environment today.
