A Cruise aboard the USCG Barque EAGLE

Free program hosted by the schooner FAME and Salem Maritime National Historic Site

The Maritime Lecture Series program hosts National Park Service staff and volunteers to describe their summer sail aboard the Coast Guard barque EAGLE.

The staff and volunteers work aboard Salem Maritime’s own tall ship, FRIENDSHIP. In August, John Newman, David Walker and Mark Hilliard boarded EAGLE in San Diego. They visited the Galapagos Islands, and were initiated into the realm of King Neptune as they crossed the equator. EAGLE sailed to Panama, where Jeremy Bumagin, John Pydynkowski and Dan Morgan joined the ship for its return to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. While aboard EAGLE, the Salem Maritime personnel honed their navigation, watch keeping and maintenance skills. They also had a heck of a good time!

Eelgrass provides one of the most important marine habitats, and we have the second largest eelgrass meadow in Massachusetts right in our front yard--on the Beverly and Manchester coast. Eelgrass is a nutrient-rich underwater plant that feeds and shelters fish, scallops, mussels, crabs, lobsters, and much more. It serves as a nursery, providing shelter away from predators for the juveniles of many species, and it absorbs pollutants, helping to keep the water clean.

Come learn about this coastal treasure.
Beverly scientists Robert Buchsbaum (MA Audubon) and Tay Evans (DMF) along with Sue Tuxbury (NOAA) and Phil Colarusso (EPA) will present information about this remarkable resource and efforts that are being made to monitor and protect off the coast of Beverly and Manchester.
